This past week, I had the blessing of leading an art project for our small homeschool group that reminded us all of the creativity God has placed in each of us. It was simple, joyful, and turned out absolutely beautiful—perfect for little ones as young as four (with a little help) and still meaningful for teens and adults.
We made wildflower shadow paintings using just wildflowers, sunlight, pencils, and watercolor paints. We placed the wildflowers in vases, then positioned them so the sun cast their shadows across each child’s paper. The kids traced the shadows with pencil, capturing the delicate and unique outline of each flower.

This part of the project really stood out to me. When we try to draw flowers from memory, we often imagine the “perfect” version—symmetrical petals, full front-facing blooms. But tracing their actual shadows revealed the real shapes: some bending, some fading at the edges, each one different. It reminded me how God not only designs each species of flower but lovingly forms each individual one.

He does the same with us.
We aren’t called to be perfectly polished or all the same. We’re called to be exactly what God made us to be—unique, purposeful, and deeply known.
After tracing, we painted the flowers with watercolor. The results were stunning—each painting as personal and creative as the child who made it.

What struck me most was the peaceful focus this project brought. It gave us a moment to pause, appreciate the beauty of God's handiwork in nature, and reflect that beauty through our own creativity.
If you’re looking for a project that blends art, nature, and a quiet moment of spiritual reflection, I highly recommend trying this.
It’s a beautiful reminder that the same God who designed the wildflowers also designed us—with intention, beauty, and the ability to create.
"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." – Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

Of course, I had to make some of my own wildflower shadow paintings.
